Student Social: The Best Christmas Markets in the UK

All I Want for Christmas is… mulled wine, a bratwurst from the markets and half a dozen cheese stalls.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! And what better way to get into the festive spirit than indulging in the UK’s best Christmas markets?

The Student Mundial team has been sleighing it up and down the country to bring you their top picks.

Which is your favourite?

Birmingham

It claims to be the biggest German Christmas Market outside of Europe and Birmingham’s Frankfurt Christmas Market certainly does not disappoint. With more than 180 stalls, the market offers a large range of traditional gifts (your typical handcrafted wooden decorations and leather goods) and enough gluhwein to keep you merry.

It runs from 10am-9pm every day until December 23rd and can be found at Victoria Square, New Street.

Manchester

Alongside the typical food, drink and gift stalls, Manchester’s Christmas Market includes a magical Ice Village, Carol-oke pods so you can sing your fave Christmas anthems and of course Zippy, the giant Santa overlooking all the festivities.

Manchester’s Christmas Markets will run until Sunday 23rd December at Albert Square from 10am – 9pm. Other market stalls can be found across the city until 22nd December and close slightly earlier at 8pm.

York

As well as being one of the most beautiful cities in England, York really goes to town with its Christmas celebrations. Rows of traditional Alpine chalets selling your favourite festive foods and locally made gifts will be available until 23rd December.

You can also treat yourself to the home of the Yorkshire Pudding wrap at The York Roast Co.

Chatsworth House

Want to tie in a visit to one the UK’s most iconic stately homes as part of your Christmas plans? Then the 14th Century Chatsworth House should not be missed. With over 100 markets stalls, a magical Once Upon a Time exhibition complete with mansion sized Christmas trees and a brass band accompaniment throughout your visit, Chatsworth is truly worth the trip.

The Markets end on 4th December but visits to the house will run until 6th January (closing 24-25th December and 1st January).

Being from Vienna, I'm spoilt for dreamy Christmas markets and the market at Glasgow's St Enoch was always just a means to an end to cure my homesickness at this time of the year – but this year, they've really outdone themselves!! Glasgow

Glasgow sure does love Christmas with two dedicated market areas at George Square and St Enoch Square offering the full range of Christmas gifts, delicious German-inspired food and warm, winter drinks.

There’s also a giant windmill and Helter Skelter – what more could you want?

The markets run up to 31st December and close at 10pm on the weekend.

London

And finally, the nation’s capital and home to one of the best Winter Wonderlands in the world. A full Bavarian village, the UK’s largest Ice Rink and nightly shows sure do create a spectacle.

Every element is worthy of a visit but be warned – such festive cheer always attracts a large crowd so be warned! Try a weekday evening if you want a quieter atmosphere.

Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park is open every day 10am-10pm until 6th January.

And that’s not it! The majority of purpose built student accommodation also host fantastic Christmas parties so you can make the most of the festive spirit in your cities.

What is your accommodation doing for you?
